A message from Rebecca:
We had a great day at the dig today for our Festival of Archaeology family day.
It was wonderful to have members of the local community helping us with the dig, and really good to see people of all ages (adults and children) enjoying themselves.
We've had a lot of exciting finds, including pottery, glass, clay pipe stems and coins, probably dating mainly from the Victorian period. There were also lots of intriguing suggestions for what the bricks in the east of our trench might be.
Archaeologists Laura, Tristan and Huw were all really impressed by the enthusiasm and hard work of our young archaeologists (and their parents!). There was lots of excitement at finds, especially for one very young archaeologist who thought that he might have found a dinosaur tooth!
The weather was a little bit miserable in the morning but that didn't put our young archaeologists off. They got their gloves and hi-vis jackets on and got going! They spent time digging in our new trench extension, sieving the spoil heap for missed artefacts, washing finds with toothbrushes, and even doing some drawing.
There was also lots of interest in the dig from other families visiting the Castle today and I enjoyed talking to them and sharing the history of the site. I also gave out plenty of flyers, which will help people to find out more. For me too it was interesting to learn more about the history of the site, and to be involved in something that I wouldn't ordinarily do.
We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and will come again next year!
You can see other photos of the day on Facebook.
If you have photos of the day we'd love to see them. Post them below, put them on Facebook, or get in touch.

Note from Alison
It was lovely to later receive this message from a parent:
Just a quick note to say thank you so much for today. We all really enjoyed the dig and the hour passed far too quickly. The staff were brilliant at helping and explaining and we all learnt a lot. My oldest in particular hasn't stopped talking about it all day!
